About the Book

For centuries, African and African American communities have practiced sacred postpartum care rooted in wisdom, rest, herbs, and sisterhood.

In Mothering the Mother, Shafia Monroe, a traditional midwife and historian of Black birth traditions, brings this lost art forward revealing how rituals such as belly binding, the lying-in period, herbal healing, and “taking-out-of-bed”ceremonies can help mothers recover in body and spirit.

This book is more than guidance — it’s a call to remembrance. A pathway for Black mothers, families, and birth workers to reclaim cultural postpartum care and to protect the lives and well-being of our mothers and babies.
